What do you call a man with no shins?
Unfortunately that is probably my best joke.
All for a natural smile. I rely not only on the ability to point my camera and make a photo, but to illicit from my clients a sense of natural self; and often I use a small joke or amusing story to do it. ..even using the said joke..
I must admit to have practised a great deal on the technical attributes of making a photo.. fstops, aperture settings, composition, editing of RAW files.. its not a matter of just holding up a camera and pressing a button to make the image, but a constant sparodic dance of button pushing and dial turning to make sure the settings are consistent with a good exposure. While the brain is engaged in the nerd process, the client can be waiting... ... ...
I've had to learn to talk to my clients as I problem solve the exposure, compensate for the different colours of lights, work the angles for a flattering image, adjust lights etc. I keep the conversation going (proving that a man can multitask) in order to keep my client alive and animated so they can be best represented in front of the camera. The worst thing is to have a busy client in front of you just waiting, so I make sure the conversation is flowing the entire time. Keeping them relaxed, asking about the details of what they do, their family, what they like, anything..
For Darren Hunter, an international in-demand speaker, it is very important that he is represented well for his business. I'm thankful that he likes my jokes and responds with a natural and engaging smile that corresponds with his dynamic and passionate personality.
It's also the reason why I love this job. I love talking to people and finding out about them, making people relaxed and enjoying what some would consider a chore in having their photograph taken. I enjoy the process of making a great portrait and meeting extraordinary people!
Nerd details: Canon 1Dx, all images lit in some way with a canon speed light 600EX-RT triggered with the Canon speed light transmitter ST-E3-RT. Thanks also to Luke Greaves for the assist and copping a parking ticket in the process of this shoot..
